Chat rooms have always been seen as a realm for geeks to congregate and talk about whatever subject interests them. It is no secret that there has been a decline in chat rooms over the past decade or so and while mIRC is still about many others have fallen away.
This can be partly down to the rise in other instant communication methods. Skype and WhatsApp are two of the most common ways in which to speak directly to people however it doesn’t fully explain why chat rooms have disappeared. After all, they serve a different purpose than instant messaging one person.
So, why do people and many geeks still use chat rooms?
They Are Great For Group Discussions
You probably have a group chat on Facebook with your friends but how do you meet and speak to a bunch of people you don’t know? Chat rooms provide the quickest and most effective way of doing this.
A load of people joins the same chat room. Maybe it is based on a particular topic or for people who enjoy a specific hobby. You can all chat together at one time and the messages come across instantly. The great thing is that anyone can join whether they are in the USA, India, Australia or even Estonia. Most chat rooms unless they are marked private are open to anyone across the world and it is a good way in which to have an active discussion with everyone joining in. You can meet a lot of new people in chat rooms and while sites such as Reddit have become popular, it can take a while to get a response whereas a chat room offers instant communication.
You Can Use Them for Dating
Chat rooms are still around as a niche way of dating online. Many rooms exist for dating and international chat rooms are very popular as a way in which to meet new people.
Rather than simply messaging someone directly you can participate in group discussions and when you find someone that you like you can then message them directly in a private chat window. In fact, it gives you the best of both worlds in a way. You are able to speak to a lot of different people at the one time to find out if they match your interests and you can also speak to someone one on one. As it is an instant form of communication you don’t need to wait days or even hours to get a response. Chat rooms also let you meet people from all over the world as well and they are a better way of dating internationally as most dating sites are specific to a particular geographical area.
They Are a Nostalgic Way of Communicating
Most of us remember chat rooms from the good old days of the internet. Back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s chat rooms were everywhere. They catered for all interests and tastes and for many people they are a nostalgic way of communicating online.
From asking someone their a/s/l to finding your niche room on AOL, chat rooms remind us of a simpler time on the internet. They were the one real instant form of communication that we had before Skype, Facebook messenger and WhatsApp all came on the scene. In fact, chat rooms were really the precursor to what we have available to us today. For anyone that wants to feel nostalgic about talking to complete strangers on the internet then a chat room is perhaps the best way to do this. While technology moves along chat rooms have still hung around to a certain extent and many people now visit them purely for nostalgic reasons.
Chat Rooms Are Still Alive
Whether it is for dating, feeling nostalgic or simply as a way to connect to people that you don’t know, chat rooms are still alive. They might not be nearly as predominate as they were say 15 years ago but they still exist.
Finding a chat room isn’t as easy as it once was. There are many still around but they aren’t advertised as publically as before. That being said, try searching for a chat room that matches your interests because you will be sure to find one somewhere. Many geeks still use chat rooms for entertainment and it is a good way in which to connect with other geeks from across the world. Country and city specific rooms are still around as well.
You might not find chat rooms as predominate as they once were however if you look hard enough you will find one that suits your tastes. Even for a trip down memory lane we recommend finding a chat room to remember what the internet was like 15 years ago.
