Must-See Upcoming Releases 2014 Fall & Winter Movies For Geeks

We love movies (I have a feeling you do too if you are reading this). If you are like us then you like to have stuff to look forward to, it really helps to get through the average mundane Wednesday. Now that summer is winding down, and school is starting up, sometimes we need that little extra something. Well today, this is that something.

Get excited. You excited yet?

Today we are rounding up some of the movies that we are MOST excited about seeing this fall (and Winter, because why not, they are close enough). There have been some GREAT movies in 2014 already, like Guardians of the Galaxy! If you haven’t seen GOTG then you should stop reading this and go see that first before your geek card gets revoked ;). Fall is going to be no different, so many good movies coming at us that cater to our geeky interests – science, space, future technology, robots, oh my!!! Ok so here we go, put these little gems in the back of your mind to get excited about heading to the theater to see whenever you are having a not so exciting day! Plus, it’s a good use of work time to take a break and watch a bunch of trailers right? Right? Yeah I thought so. Carry on.

Big Hero 6

Release Date: November 7th, 2014 (USA)

This one comes from Disney, you hear that geeky parents? You can enjoy this one on your own or entertain your kids with it! Win Win! This comedy adventure is about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius (sounds like every one of us right?). His closest companion if you couldn’t already tell is a freaking awesome robot named Baymax (kids of the future get all the cool toys). The trailer is pretty funny and the futuristic world just looks cool, I think it will be a good time :).

Interstellar

Release Date: November 7th, 2014

OMG this movie. Want to see so bad. First I wanted to just see it because it was a new Matthew McConaughey movie – ever since his recent descent into badassery I’ve wanted to see all of his movies and shows. Two words, TRUE DETECTIVE. So freaking good. Anyway, you can imagine my immense excitement when I watched the trailer and realized “Wait a minute.. this movie is about SPACE!” (yeah the name should have given it away I know). This isn’t just any space movie though, not like gravity, no – the premise is way more exotic than going to the international space station! This sci-fi film is directed by Christopher Nolan of The Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception fame, so it should be good, theoretically! Interstellar involves inter-dimensional travel through a wormhole (SERIOUSLY COOL), the voyages main goal is saving humanity from extinction. It’s gonna be good. Oscar winners Matthew and Anne Hathaway aren’t the only A-list actors in Interstellar — Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Topher Grace, and Casey Affleck also have parts in the sci-fi movie.

The Theory of Everything

Release Date: New Year’s Day, 2015

Ok Ok, so yeah this is technically coming out in 2015 but… STEPHEN HAWKING. Nuff Said. I’m seeing this. I got so excited when I saw the trailer, wasn’t expecting this. However, I hope it is accurate and more about his life, physics, science and the universe – rather than the love story that seems to be splattered all over the trailer. Sure the love story adds to the inspiration but his life is pretty damn inspirational as it is, also if you know anything about Stephen Hawking you know that he left his wife for his nurse at one point, and got divorced from her as well, so not quite the feel good love story you are looking for lol, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that this brilliant man had an inspirational life and brought to us such knowledge. Moral of the story is that life, and love, isn’t always the perfect display you see in trailers – and that’s ok. Very inspirational all around, can’t wait to see it!

Fury

Release Date: November 14th, 2014

War is Hell, and ultimately pointless in the progression of the human civilization, but Brad Pitt makes this war movie look awesome!! Although it does have Shia LaBoeuf in it, I think we can forgive the film for this. Maybe. The film is set during the last months of World War II in April 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theater, a battle-hardened U.S. Army sergeant in the 2nd Armored Division named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt gets the coolest nicknames) commands a Sherman tank called “Fury” and its five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. History geeks will appreciate the film (hopefully) and action geeks will enjoy the Spartan like tension of the battles!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

Release Date: November 21, 2014

Hunger Games!! The latest installment of the hunger games features Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) finding herself in District 13 after she destroys the Games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courageous acts. Fans of the book series will definitely be lining up for this one!

Dracula Untold

Release Date: October 3, 2014

Dracula is a BOSS. All geeks love a vampire movie, unless it’s Twilight… well this isn’t twilight! It just looks awesome. I’ve always loved Dracula, in every incarnation – whether it be a movie about him, a show, or a video game where he is the Boss (I’m looking at you CASTLEVANIA). This movie will supposedly shed the light on the man behind the monster, can’t wait!!

Hope you enjoyed this quick list of the best movies coming up this fall & winter in 2014 that we are just so excited to see!
