So recently I finally installed Garry’s Mod – I had heard about it for years, but never ventured into it, until now. It is such an interesting mod – it is basically a neat sandbox physics game using a modified Source engine designed by Garry Newman, with not much point other than to have a LOT of fun with all of the half life games source objects and maps. Garry’s Mod was originally a mod for Valve’s Half-Life 2, but was later made into a standalone game. For good reason. It reminds me of those old debug modes in video games, I remember ages ago when Sonic the Hedgehog was popular there was a debug mode where you could spawn all the objects in the game – GMOD is like the super evolved version of that. Now I like to think of it as almost a minecraft for Valve games – because people are making add-ons, maps, and tons of other stuff for people to add into GMOD. The ecosystem is thriving, still, years after release.
A Brief History of Garry’s Mod
Garry’s Mod has been available on Valve’s content delivery service Steam since November 29, 2006, It was a smoother, cleaner, version of the free mod that gave millions of gamers so much fun. In the past, purchasing Garry’s Mod was free from 2004 to 2005 with the last free version released on November 27. As of September 2014 the game has sold 6 million copies. Since the early day’s It’s been continually reworked in the same fashion as the mod was, with rolling additions making it easier to find content in-game and download it for free. The heart of it is still the Sandbox, it’s where most people spend their time, just building silly things and showing them off. Being such a huge success it’s hard to imagine that it started off by accident (like most great discoveries). Garry Newman says in an interview that he was just messing around, trying to learn the SDK, and learn it he did, and changed the course of gaming history, even if just by a little bit. It was funded by a dating site he had created (while he was working as a PHP programmer for another guy with a dating site), so living off the proceeds from that site gave him a lot of time to make the awesome Garry’s Mod. So interesting! If you want to read more about the history here is a good full write up.
One of the coolest aspects about Garry’s mod is just the ability to play it as a sandbox, and do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you’ve ever wanted to do in Valve games. Something that stuck with me when I started playing it was the backgrounds that you see when you start Garry’s mod – they are actual photographs people have taken in the actual game – thus making Garry’s mod it’s own artistic medium for people to express themselves, photographers or not, you can become a “game photographer” in Garry’s mod – and pull of extremely unique pictures, scenarios, and poses due to the versatility of the game itself. Unlike Pokemon SNAP (Remember that one?) and other games like Metal Gear Solid where you could take in game pics, you can actually create Unique Art inside Garry’s Mod – that no one else would ever have otherwise captured because your own imagination is what fueled the objects and the scene specifically. I just think that is freaking cool. The things that gamers playing Garry’s mod are creating and photographing are really beautiful, professional, and freaking realistic!! I’ve seen tons of awesome user created screenshots from Garry’s mod at this point, and I figured i’d share with you guys the best ones! So here we go, get inspired to create your own!
